About Ian Haight

For anyone that lived through the 60’s my name is pronounced like San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district and for anyone else it is pronounced like “hate”.  I have deep roots in Southwest Michigan.  I am the 6th generation to grow up on my family’s centennial farm.   I now reside in Saint Joseph with my wife and two young sons.  I am fiscally responsible, socially progressive, and 100% about communication.  I encourage anyone with questions or comments to reach out to me.  One of the problems with the current state of politics is that people feel out of touch with their politicians.  I will personally respond, both as a candidate and once I am elected.

I attended Kalamazoo College where I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and received my teaching certificate.  After Governor Snyder slashed school funding, I decided to focus on Instructional Technology and attended Wayne State University for my Master’s Degree in Information Science.  I currently work for Berrien RESA providing Instructional Technology services for all of the public schools in Berrien and Cass counties.

I got my start in local politics when I helped lead a successful recall effort against several township officials that had stopped listening to their constituents.  After that, I was elected twice to be the Clerk of Hagar Township where I served on the finance committee and chaired the election committee.  I was also appointed as the Treasurer of the North Berrien Fire Rescue Board.  While I have experience, I am not a career politician.  I have not been bought.  There is an inherent value to having a fresh perspective and an open mind while confronting the problems facing all of us here in Michigan.
